Meet Hugo Bergerioux: plasma-wave interaction in EPTs

Bonjour! My name is Hugo Bergerioux, and I just joined the ZARATHUSTRA team as a PhD student. I studied Applied Physics in EPFL, specializing in Plasma Physics. During my studies, I developed a keen interest in space technologies. Combining my background in physics with my passion for space research naturally led me to the field of Electric Propulsion.

My thesis focuses on studying and optimizing numerically the interaction between plasma and electromagnetic waves in Electrodeless Plasma Thrusters. EPTs are considered among the most promising candidates for deep space exploration missions. Their functionality relies on the efficient power deposition of electromagnetic waves onto the plasma, making plasma-wave interaction a critical process. Despite its importance, this interaction remains poorly understood because of its complexity, posing a significant challenge to optimizing these thrusters.

This PhD thesis aims to first explore and evaluate alternative configurations of EPT geometries and antennas, using the cold plasma approximation, to estimate their efficiency. The second phase of the research will involve contributing to the development of a kinetic electromagnetic code and applying it to investigate key questions about nonlinear wave-plasma interactions within the context of EPT operation.

As part of the ZARATHUSTRA project, I’m excited to explore the plasma physics behind electric propulsion. The prospect that my simulations and contributions to the team’s efforts could advance the understanding and development of complex EPT designs greatly motivates me!
